On July 28, 1864, anticipating a Confederate attack on the right of the 15th A. C. [US] west of Ezra Ch., Sherman sent Davis’ division of the 14th A. C. on a circuitous march west to come in on Logan’s right by way of Lick Skillet (Adamsville) Road. Davis’ troops, led by Gen. J. D. Morgan, marched toward the Chattahoochee intending to reach Lick Skillet by a side road, but without maps or guides the column wandered through forest and swamps until Confederate cavalry halted it and peremptory orders sent it back. Logan’s 15th, hard pressed by Hood’s forces, nevertheless held on with help from 12 regiments of the 16th and 17th A. C. aligned along Chapel Rd.
