Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve in Buchanan Township, Michigan, is a 105-acre public garden and protected landscape along the St. Joseph River that grew from the home of Kay and Walter Boydston into a larger preserve opened to the public in 1964 through Lawrence and Mary Plym. Expanded by later land purchases, it includes formal gardens, woodland preserve, arboretum, and restored tallgrass prairie. Its features include a Japanese dry garden, tufa rock garden, conservatory of tropical ferns, and specialized collections of hostas, hardy ferns, lilacs, lilies, and herbs. It also functions as an educational center focused on ecosystems, animals, and regional habitats.
