The McCray School, built in 1915-16, is a rare example of an early twentieth century one-room school for Black children in rural Alamance County. Albert Graham donated the land, Andrew Nash, a local carpenter, completed the construction with community volunteers, and a rear expansion was added in 1925. The school remained in operation until four rural schoolhouses were consolidated in 1951 and McCray students transferred to the Pleasant Grove School. It then continued as a community center until an oak tree destroyed the rear portion in 1981, and renovations supported by the community, non-profits, volunteers, and the Alamance-Burlington School Board were completed in 2021.
