San Mateo County History Museum
History
In downtown Redwood City, the San Mateo County History Museum occupies the former county courthouse, built in 1910 for the San Mateo County Superior Court, making the building itself a central historic artifact. The museum grew from the San Mateo County Historical Association, founded in 1935, and began in 1963 in a classroom at the College of San Mateo before moving to the old courthouse in 1998 and opening there in 1999. Its restored City Beautiful setting, highlighted by a stained-glass dome, frames exhibitions on county history, while its library, archives, collections, programs, publications, preservation work, and operation of Woodside Store and Sánchez Adobe Park make it a broader steward of local history.
