Avery one-room school was established on April 4, 1886. Classes were held from March to December because winter snows closed the highway. Hazel Fischer taught there from July 1916 to March 1941, and in 1939 she took all the students to the San Francisco World’s Fair and was also known to take them swimming for physical education. The school closed in March 1941. After the present highway was constructed and the timber industry grew, a new school was built in White Pines.
