The Teal home was one of several houses caught up in the Battle of Ridgeway and served as shelter for the Teal family during the fighting. Several other farms in the area were commandeered by the Fenian Army or the Canadian Militia. The Baxter log house was used as a hospital, and the first soldier wounded in the battle died there. Reverend David Inglis recalled meeting Dr. May with several men carrying Ensign McEachren from the field to a log house on the left-hand side of the road, where Dr. May asked him to tell the wounded officer that his wound was mortal.
