Whites Hill, a 1,427-foot mountain in the northern Adirondacks southeast of Parishville in St. Lawrence County, became part of New York’s forest fire detection network when an 80-foot Aermotor LS40 steel lookout tower was built there in 1950. The tower went into service in 1951, when observers reported three fires and logged 588 visitors, reflecting both its practical use and its appeal as a destination. It remained active through the 1971 fire season before aerial detection reduced the need for such stations and the tower was removed. Its surviving cabin was relocated to the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Trout Lake Shop for continued use.
