Red Rocks Park is a national Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and its Trading Post and Amphitheater are Denver Landmarks. The Trading Post, an example of Pueblo-style architecture made of brick and stucco, was constructed in 1931. Red Rocks Amphitheater, designed by architect Burnham Hoyt, began to be carved from the rock by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and was dedicated after World War II in August of 1946. Made of little more than wooden seating, simple indigenous materials, and natural acoustics, the Amphitheater is an internationally renowned 9,000-seat performance venue. The tilted and eroded sandstone and siltstone visible here cover layers of ancient rock beds deposited as sand and mud in streams, lakes, and seas, and mountain building that created the Rocky Mountains slowly lifted and tilted the red sandstone and siltstone slabs known today as Red Rocks. The park is also home to wildlife and plants including mountain lions, rattlesnakes, American kestrels, evening primrose, yucca, creeping mahonia, mountain mahagony, and common chokecherry.
