Emerald Mound, near Stanton, Mississippi, is a major Native American archaeological site associated with the Plaquemine culture and the ancestors of the historic Natchez. Used from about 1200 to 1730 CE, it became an important ceremonial center, with an unusually designed precinct set atop a massive earthwork formed by reshaping a natural hill. One of the largest Mississippian-period mounds in the United States, it served surrounding communities and likely supported elite buildings, including a temple and residences. Its ceremonial role later shifted to the Grand Village of the Natchez, and excavations since 1838 have revealed artifacts and evidence of long occupation.
