About 0.3 mile upstream on North Fork Peachtree Creek stood a mill owned by Wm. Johnston (1789-1855), a landmark of Federal military operations in the summer of 1864. Schofield’s 23d A.C., after crossing the Chattahoochee River at Isom’s Ferry on July 8, began its march toward Decatur on July 17 by way of Old Cross Keys and the House plantation. Cox’s division camped at House’s, and from there Hascall’s division moved southeast to Johnston’s mill, where it camped on the night of July 18. This route enabled the 23d A.C. to join McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee, which was likewise marching to Decatur.
