On the night of September 20, 1777, during the struggle for American Independence, patriots fell on this spot in the well known massacre at Paoli, where British troops under the immediate command of Major General Grey killed American soldiers serving under Genl. Anthony Wayne. Here repose the remains of fifty three American soldiers, remembered as victims of cold blooded cruelty and British barbarity.
