Traveling the Lincoln Highway gave people a sense of freedom and spontaneity, but it also created a new responsibility in caring for the vehicle. Livery stables and blacksmith shops gave way to gasoline and service stations, and the petroleum products industry began to grow. The Aero Oil Company was incorporated in 1929, opened its first station in New Oxford on October 26, 1929, and added stations in Gettysburg and Hanover in 1930. Until 1946, the company distributed Fleet Wing Petroleum Products, McCreary Tires, and Reading Batteries, then changed its source of supply to the Atlantic Refining Company. By the close of business on August 31, 1949, its petroleum deliveries totaled more than 103 million gallons.
