This land, which was in Mississippi until 1838, originally belonged to the Chickasaws. Since 1873 it has served as a central hub for education in Collierville, beginning when Bellevue Female College constructed a two story wooden building here. After the college burned in 1896, it was replaced with a brick structure, and although Bellevue College suspended operations in 1904, Collierville High School, founded in 1905, used the college’s buildings and expanded in 1911 and 1924. In 1935, a new high school facility was built here by the Works Progress Administration, and the structure remains an ideal example of the WPA Moderne architectural style. Grades 1-12 were taught here until 1960, when the elementary grades moved to Peterson Lake Road. In 1996, after Collierville High relocated to Frank and Byhalia Roads, the facility became Collierville Middle School until 2012, when Collierville Middle moved to Quinn Road. Ownership of the property passed from Shelby County Schools to the Town of Collierville in 2012.
