Blair County was formed on February 26, 1846, from Bedford and Huntingdon counties. It was named for the Honorable John Blair, a prominent citizen who died in 1832. Hollidaysburg, the county seat, was incorporated in 1836. The city of Altoona, founded in 1849, became a major railroad center.
