Originally known as Piccawaxen, the parish was renamed William and Mary under the Establishment Act of 1692. Christ Church, in existence in 1690 and enlarged in 1750, is otherwise unchanged except for post-Civil War repairs. It was the boyhood church of Thomas John Clagett, the first bishop consecrated in the United States in 1792, and is the oldest public building in Charles County.
