Grace Sherwood lived in Princess Anne County from the later 1600’s until the 1730’s, when many American colonists believed witchcraft explained unusual events. In 1706, she underwent a trial by water, or “witch ducking,” after charges that her behavior disrupted the lives of her neighbors. She was found guilty of witchcraft, but her life was spared, and in 2006 the governor of Virginia formally pardoned her 300 years later. She was Virginia’s only convicted witch tried by water.
