For travelers arriving by train from San Francisco, the first stop in Monterey was the Del Monte station between the bay and Hotel Del Monte, where only hotel guests left the train. Other passengers continued past the freight warehouse to the Monterey passenger depot, the terminus for arrivals in Monterey, whose location offered a view of the bay and convenient access to downtown. The foundation of the Del Monte depot remains visible in front of the old Hotel Del Monte, now used by the United States Navy as part of the Naval Postgraduate School. Although renovations have altered the appearance of the freight warehouse and passenger depot buildings over the years, their classic design origins remain tied to Monterey’s history: the passenger depot reflects the growth of tourism and local population, while the freight depot signifies merchants and industry.
