Lewis and Clark Trail
History
4
On November 18, 1805, William Clark set out overland with 10 men and York to the ocean, found Capt. Lewis's name on a tree and engraved his own, crossed a low neck of land one-half mile wide to the main ocean, ascended a high open hill covered with coarse grass, descended north of it, and camped; this site is probably within a few hundred feet of that campsite.
