John Johnathan Pratt was the inventor of an early typewriter, the pterotye. Born in 1831 in Union District, South Carolina, and buried 2 miles west of this site after his death in 1905, he developed his first writing machine near here about 1860 while serving as register in chancery and later as editor of the National Democrat. He did not receive adequate credit for the invention because of the Civil War.
