On the sixth day of August, A.D. 1777, the Battle of Oriskany was fought here, where the British invasion was checked and thwarted. General Nicholas Herkimer, the intrepid leader of the American forces, though mortally wounded, kept command of the fight until the enemy fled. The lifeblood of more than two hundred Patriot heroes made this battleground sacred forever.
