Dick Dowling and his forty two Irish patriots were honored for their feat at Sabine Pass, Texas. On September 8, 1863, an army of fifteen thousand Federals attacked the small fort at the pass, and the garrison under Lieut. Dick Dowling, without the loss of a man, disabled and captured three of the gunboats and three hundred and fifty prisoners.
