Bridgewater College, located in the town of Bridgewater two miles southwest, is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Church of the Bretheren. It grew out of the Spring Creek Normal School and Collegiate Institute, founded in 1880, and became Bridgewater College nine years later. It has been coeducational from the beginning.
