Moses Dunning Stivers was an abolitionist, newspaper publisher, ally to General Van Wyck during the Civil War, merchant, druggist, and educator. He was a leading citizen who held many civic and political offices throughout eleven presidencies, including serving as a U.S. Congressman in 1889. His sons, Lewis S. and John D., erected the Middletown Daily Times building in 1896.
