Eve of Appomattox
Military
Part of Lee’s army passed here on April 8, 1865, retreating westward. The Second Corps of Grant’s army, led by Humphreys, passed in pursuit that afternoon. Grant spent the night here, received a note from Lee early on the morning of April 9 regarding surrender, sent a reply, and then went on to Appomattox.
