The Great Gateway
History
3
An elevated passageway bordered by two exceptionally large mounds joins the middle fort to the south fort. Apparently constructed before the larger north fort, it was the primary entrance to the south fort. Immediately south stands a small earthen mound connected by a stone pavement to a nearby ditch. This pavement permitted access to the ditch and extended 150 feet into the interior of the south fort. Warren K. Moorehead recovered human remains from a gateway platform just within the south fort and from a small gateway terrace outside.
