Since the early 1900s, people have come to this site for an elevated view of Mount Rainier. The park road was designed to harmonize with the landscape and take advantage of sweeping vistas such as this one, and the surrounding scenery has long inspired people to explore, preserve, and connect with their heritage. In the presence of the mountain, this view and others like it helped inspire a deep and lasting commitment to protect the park and keep it in its original, pristine state. Mount Rainier’s beauty lies in many parts of a larger whole: rivers tumbling from boulder to boulder, a tiny fawn beneath a shrub, flower fields stretching into the distance, glaciers grinding at the high mound of rock, and the people drawn to the mountain as if by a great magnet. Together, these are all part of the story of Mount Rainier.
