John Beck, Sr., son of Devault and Catherina Beck, was born January 6, 1761, and died November 15, 1843. An American Revolutionary War veteran, he served in the North Carolina Militia from 1778 to 1781. In the summer of 1778, at the age of 17, he volunteered to take up arms and join the fight that gave birth to this great nation.
