Mount Magazine, officially Magazine Mountain, is the highest point in Arkansas and the Interior Highlands, rising in western Arkansas north of Blue Mountain Lake with a broad, flat summit edged by steep cliffs. Its two main summits are Signal Hill and Mossback Ridge. The mountain’s name is commonly tied to the French word magasin, though its exact origin remains uncertain. Formed from ancient sedimentary rocks and shaped by erosion, it stands high above the Arkansas River Valley. Its cooler, wetter, often foggy climate supports distinctive conditions, and today it is a major state park destination known for scenic access, outdoor recreation, and diverse wildlife, including rare butterflies.
