The Alamo Mission began in 1718 as Misión San Antonio de Valero, a Spanish mission founded to convert Indigenous people and strengthen Spain’s foothold in the region. After moving several times, it settled at its present site in 1724 and developed into a large, partly fortified community. Secularized in 1793 and later occupied by a military company, it became known as the Alamo. Its most famous moment came in the Texas Revolution, when Mexican forces under Santa Anna besieged and overran the Texian garrison in 1836. Later damaged, reused, and partially commercialized, the site was ultimately preserved and remains a major historic symbol of Texas.
