On September 19th, 1863, at 4 P.M., Lytle's Brigade of Sheridan's Division in McCook's Corps, commanded by Brig. Gen. William H. Lytle, held a first position while Sheridan's Division moved toward Viniard's. Lytle's Brigade remained behind to guard the bridge and the ford. The 88th Illinois and 21st Michigan, with two sections of the battery, were posted at the ford near the mills. The 36th Illinois and 24th Wisconsin, with the remaining section, were placed on the higher ground to the left on the Chattanooga Road. The enemy's skirmishers felt the position but did not attack it. At 3:30 A.M. on the 20th, the brigade moved north on the Chattanooga Road to Viniard's and then with its division to the high ground just west of Widow Glenn's.
