Wupatki National Monument in north-central Arizona preserves a dense group of Native American settlement sites, including pueblos built by Ancient Pueblo peoples such as the Cohonina, Kayenta, and Sinagua. After the eleventh-century eruption of Sunset Crater spread moisture-holding ash across the land, farming supported a growing population, and Wupatki Pueblo became a large multistory center with more than 100 rooms and a rare northern ballcourt. Though the settlement was permanently abandoned by 1225, many sandstone walls still stand, and artifacts reveal long-distance trade. The area remains culturally important to Hopi, Navajo, Zuni, and other descendant communities.
