The Redstone missile program, begun in 1951 by the U.S. Army, was designed to be mobile and capable of being launched by combat troops under battlefield conditions. On May 5, 1961, a powerful Redstone rocket with a Mercury capsule carried Cdr. Alan B. Shepard, Jr. into suborbital flight from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
