Sara Elizabeth Low, a Batesville native, was known from her youth for kindness and helpfulness to others, qualities she carried into adulthood and for which fellow crew members and passengers remembered her when she became a flight attendant for American Airlines. On September 11, 2001, she put others before herself and whatever fears she may have had, working with crewmates to calm concerned passengers and provide key information to authorities. She died as she lived—kind, helpful, and strong. Her kindness also extended to animals. As a child, she delighted in playing with stray animals that showed up at Midwest Lime Company. After college, she returned to work with her father at MWL and again cared for strays, ensuring that they received care from a veterinarian and diligently finding them homes. Delilah, a black cat that showed up one day at the quarry, became her beloved pet. Her family shares this love for animals, and in the years since 9/11, the grief of their journeys to New York has been tempered by visits to dog parks near ground zero, with the hope that a special space in Sara's hometown will bring joy to dogs, their owners, and passers-by.
