Hitsville U.S.A. at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit was Motown’s first headquarters and recording studio, purchased by Berry Gordy in 1959 and adapted into both a business center and the compact Studio A. As Motown expanded, neighboring houses took on publishing, finance, artist development, management, and sales, helping drive the label’s huge success during its Detroit years. Operations began shifting in the late 1960s, and Gordy moved headquarters to Los Angeles in 1972. Esther Gordy Edwards then led preservation of the site, which since 1985 has operated as the Motown Museum and remains a major Detroit cultural attraction.
