Built in 1924 as a six-teacher brick Rosenwald School, Lincoln Heights School served as a “Haven of Knowledge” for colored students in Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties. The original structure had an H-shape design. The Julius Rosenwald Fund provided money toward construction, with additional contributions from state and local governments as well as from colored citizens. The school was enlarged to fourteen classrooms between 1926 and 1950.
