Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern New Mexico protects 4,224 acres where the Great Plains meet the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with the Mora River running through diverse habitats that support bison, elk, cougars, many bird species, and endangered wildlife. Created in 2012 from the former Wind River Ranch, it was donated for protection of native species and continued Pueblo of Pojoaque bison grazing, with additional funding supporting its management. As part of a larger conservation area, it serves scientific and educational purposes while restoration work repairs river channels, floodplains, erosion, and wetlands. Limited public access allows wildlife viewing and photography along designated trails.
