In Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln lived in this house from 1844 to 1861, the only home he ever owned, while his family life and political rise unfolded there. He and Mary Todd bought it two years after their marriage, three of their children were born there, and their son Eddie died there. During these years Lincoln served in the U.S. House of Representatives and was elected president. The restored home and surrounding neighborhood preserve the setting of those formative years, including nearby buildings that interpret local history. Public preservation began in 1887 with Robert Todd Lincoln’s donation of the house to Illinois.
