The Winfree community began in 1831 as a ranch of early Texas settler Abraham Winfree. By 1914, population growth and inadequate scattered rural churches for local farming families led community leaders to establish Burton Baptist Church in August 1915 after purchasing a deed to part of the land. Named for its first pastor, Reverend F.A. Burton, the church began with 23 members. Reverend Marion Stephenson became pastor a year later, and by 1920 the congregation had grown to 86 members and gained two deacons. In 1923, a larger church building was constructed nearby to replace the old one, and the church was renamed Winfree Baptist Church. As the community continued to grow, the church established a women’s missionary society by 1936. A parsonage was built by 1940 and rebuilt as a modernized brick building ten years later. By 1959, continued growth led the congregation to build a new church on new land, purchasing 5.9 acres from Ivy Winfree Kimball one mile south of the old site on land Abraham Winfree had once owned in 1831. In later years, the church added an educational building, rebuilt it after a fire in 1980, and constructed a new auditorium and other facilities. Since 1915, the church has had 25 pastors and 23 deacons, its membership has exceeded 1,000, and it has supported the founding of other churches and missionary work beyond Orange County as far as Mexico and Southeast Asia.
