Located on September 15, 1846 by mountain man William Craig and his Indian wife Isabel, this was the first homestead in Idaho. Craig had been the first permanent white settler in Idaho in 1840, became the first Nez Perce Indian Agent in 1848, served as interpreter at the Walla Walla, Flathead, and Blackfoot Councils in 1855, and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Washington Territory Volunteers during the Indian Wars in 1856. He later became the first Postmaster of Walla Walla in 1858. The family of the Reverend Henry Harmon Spaulding was sheltered here following the Whitman Massacre in 1847.
