During the Civil War, Richard Lafayette Flynn and his wife, Ezyiphia, ran an Underground Railroad stop in Cumberland County on Big Laurel Creek, assisting Unionist refugees, escaped slaves, and soldiers, including Andrews' Raiders from Chattanooga, on their way to Kentucky. A Federal scout, Flynn earned the name “Red Fox” for his ability to slip through the area as furtively as a red fox. He died in 1905 and is buried in the Flynn Cemetery.
