Fort Richardson's cavalry post hospital stood in a fort built to halt Indian depredations in North Texas. It was one of the buildings and units inspected in May 1871 by Gen. Wm. Tecumseh Sherman when news arrived of the massacre of the Warren Wagon Train, 24 miles northwest. The killers, later found at Fort Sill, were brought to trial in Jacksboro in the first instance of Indians being tried in the white man's court in North Texas.
