Lester Lake, known as “Marvelo,” was a magician, humorist, and innovator born in New Trenton. By 1925 he had begun performing magic professionally in Brookville and that same year was inducted into Queen City Mystics, Assembly 11 of the Society of American Magicians. From 1925 to 1960 he traveled extensively, performing at parks, theaters, schools, and nightclubs, and during World War II he toured Europe with the USO. He is credited with developing a wide array of tricks and illusions, including Burned Alive (1929), The Guillotine (1931), and Disecto (1942). He created new magic tricks independently and later became an associate of Abbott’s Magic Company in Michigan. His contributions to magic influenced many magicians, including fellow New Trenton native John Calvert.
