Michigan Stadium, the University of Michigan’s football home in Ann Arbor, grew from Fielding Yost’s push for a larger venue after Ferry Field could no longer meet demand. Opened in 1927 and modeled after the Yale Bowl, it became the largest stadium in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, with most of its immense seating hidden below ground level. Over time it expanded, modernized, and hosted innovations such as the nation’s first electronic scoreboard for official game time in a stadium. Best known for extraordinary attendance and the “Big House” identity, it has also hosted major public events, hockey, and soccer while remaining a landmark of college football.
