At New Bern Battlefield Park in New Bern, pristinely preserved Confederate defensive earthworks stand on 27 acres where a ferocious battle was fought on 14 March 1862. Five miles north in the city of New Bern, the Attmore-Oliver House, built circa 1790-1800, holds a very significant collection of Civil War artifacts and serves as the headquarters of the New Bern Historical Society.
