Mount Lee
Pop Culture
Mount Lee, a peak in the Santa Monica Mountains within Griffith Park, is most famous for carrying the Hollywood Sign on its southern slope. Once an unnamed member of the “three sisters,” its summit was first linked to unrealized residential plans, then to the Beachwood Canyon development whose giant sign advertised a real estate venture backed by Mack Sennett and Harry Chandler. The mountain was later named for Don Lee, whose broadcasting ventures made it an early television transmission site before broadcasters turned to Mount Wilson. After wartime U.S. Army use and later development threats, nearby land was preserved and added to Griffith Park in 2010.
