Mount David, a rocky summit in Lewiston, Maine, rises 381 feet on the Bates College campus behind Rand Hall and remains a prominent landmark for its views and local history. Originally called David's Mountain after David Davis, son of early Lewiston settler Amos Davis, it was bought by Davis in 1803 with 100 surrounding acres. The summit became closely associated with Bates College after its opening, and in the 1860s Davis heirs donated a summit site for an observatory, though it was never built there. Its name endures in college traditions and reflects ties to Lewiston's early settlement, education, and community life.
