This Is the Place Heritage Park stands near Emigration Canyon on the east side of Salt Lake City at the spot traditionally linked to Brigham Young’s first view of the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847, a defining moment in Utah history. The site became associated with Young’s reported declaration that the valley was the right place for Latter-day Saint settlement after their expulsion from Nauvoo. Many Mormon pioneers later entered by the same route, and Utah still observes Pioneer Day on that date. Over time, memorials at the site grew into a large state park and living-history complex preserving and interpreting Utah’s settlement past.
