The Misfits is a contemporary western drama filmed in 1960 and best known for the final film roles of Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. It was directed by John Huston and written by Arthur Miller, who in 1956 lived outside Reno and drew inspiration from Nevada's desert landscapes, wild mustangs, and local residents. The film stars Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Eli Wallach, Montgomery Clift, and Thema Ritter, and Miller wrote the screenplay specifically for Monroe, his wife at the time. Its story follows Monroe's character, the recently divorced Roslyn Taybor, and her new forlorn friends as they go to the Dayton rodeo and plan to wrangle a herd of wild mustangs. The wild-mustang wrangling scenes were shot on a dry lake bed near Stagecoach, 16 miles east of Dayton, now called Misfits Flats, while the bar and rodeo scenes were filmed in downtown Dayton. Monroe's paddle ball scene with the rest of the cast was filmed inside the Odean Hall and Saloon, and other local filming locations included the Washoe County Court House, the Truckee River, Harrah's Hotel and Casino, Quail Canyon, and Pyramid Lake. During production, the cast stayed in Reno at the Mapes Hotel. Filming was completed on November 4, 1960, twelve days before Clark Gable's death. The film was released on February 1, 1961, and Monroe did not complete another film before her death in August 1962.
