Frederick Douglass called for a composite nation in which, before the law, there would be no rich or poor, no high or low, no white or black, but a common country, common citizenship, equal rights, and a common destiny. He served as United States Marshal, Chargé d'Affaires to the Dominican Republic, Minister to Haiti, counselor to President Abraham Lincoln, publisher, author, orator, abolitionist, and slave.
