Mount Watatic, a 1,832-foot monadnock at the southern end of the Wapack Range near the Massachusetts–New Hampshire border, is a prominent hiking destination crossed by the Wapack and Midstate trails. Probably named from a Native American term meaning “wigwam brook,” it also marks a watershed divide between rivers flowing to the Atlantic and to Long Island Sound. During much of the 20th century it had a small ski area, later abandoned, and its summit once held a state fire tower. After a proposed cellular tower development, a coalition purchased and protected the summit and surrounding land in 2002, with additional acreage conserved in 2022.
